3. Monarchs

‘Monarchs’ refers to Britain’s kings and queens, who have usually become sovereign – head of state – by hereditary right; Britain is the oldest monarchy in the world; there is a 3,000-year history of about 140 kings & queens, representing extraordinary continuity; the islander’s ancient tradition is of a mixed government of the regal and the democratic; in modern times this has involved a constitutional monarch in a parliamentary democracy; some nations have not allowed women to rule, but Britain has the proudest tradition of queens anywhere, to the present queen, Elizabeth II (b1926); William Shakespeare (1564-1616) described Britain as ‘this sceptred isle’; he was referring to a royal sceptre, a symbol of power; yet the consent of the people has also been a vital part of the British tradition; the British Chronicles, carefully weighed, have provided significant information for this section; new students of ancient British history could do worse than start with Flinders Petrie's essay 'Neglected British History' [More 19], before reading the work alluded to in that, the Tysilio Chronicle [More 18], and delving into the mighty works of the Tudor historian Holinshed and the Stuart historian Percy Enderbie [examples of both of whose texts are appended to a number of More Articles; see Sources]
